Colophon: ”Diesen von Fust und Schöffer mit Typen Gutenbergs in drei Farben gedruckten Canon missae hat die Gutenberg-Gesellschaft in Mainz als Festgabe zur 500-Jahr-Feier der Druckkunst im Jahre 1940 im Typendruck neu herstellen lassen. Die Schriftgießerei D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt am Main hat als Stiftung für das Gutenberg-Museum zu Mainz die zu diesem Neudruck benutzten Schriften nach Angaben von Gustav Mori in der Schriftgußtechnik Gutenbergs schneiden und gießen lassen und ebenso den Satz und Druck in ihrer Hausdruckerei ausgeführt. Das handgeschöpfte Büttenpapier wurde von der Papierfabrik J. W. Zanders in Bergisch Gladbach angefertigt. Die Druckfarben lieferte die Firma Gebr. Hartmann, Chemische Fabrik, Halle-Ammendorf, nach eingehenden Untersuchungen über die Farben der Frühdrucker. Den Einband fertigte Ernst Rehbein in Darmstadt”.

A beautiful type facsimile of Fust & Schöffer’s Canon Missae (Mainz, Johann Fust and Peter Schoeffer, 1458, ISTC im00736000), produced by The Gutenberg Society in Mainz to celebrate 500 years of printing. It was printed in three colours using types specially cut and cast by Stempel AG in Frankfurt, the paper was handmade by the J. W. Zanders paper factory in Bergisch Gladbach, and the book was bound by Ernst Rehbein in Darmstadt.
”Another of Fust and Schoffer’s folio editions was the Canon missae of ca. 1458, a gathering of twelve durable vellum leaves intended to be inserted into the middle of a worn-out manuscript Missal for use by priests during the daily Mass ceremony. Three copies have been discovered, each preserved within a 15th-century Missal. [...] A handful of fragments also survives. [...] In each case, these early printed editions have come down to us in severely reduced numbers, with the Canon missae falling perilously close to extinction. Other editions from the same early presses doubtless have disappeared entirely” (Princeton).
