Bartolozzi, Francesco (?): Engraved trade card for ”F. B. Daniell & Son. Fine Old Engravings / 32, Cranbourn St / London W.C.”.
Etching on laid paper, printed in red / reddish brown. 6,4 x 9,6 cms (plate), 6,9 x 10,2 cms (sheet). Double curved edge of circular watermark visible at foot. Minute repair top verso. Very fine.
A proof impression before letters is in the British Museum (Heal, 100.27). If indeed by Bartolozzi (1728-1815), the etching itself would have to be from 1815 at the latest, and used as a trade card with text for Daniell & Son only in or around 1827, when the firm was established.
F. B. Daniell & Son were a London-based firm of print dealers active from 1827 until c. 1970. The firm specialized in British and French mezzotints, stipples, and colour prints from the 18th and 19th centuries. Closely linked with the BM, and a trusted agent alongside Colnaghi. According to Dudley Snelgrove, in later years the shop was managed by Hugh Tregaskis.
