Attractive half red morocco, spine with five raised bands, top edge gilt, else uncut, pictorial wrappers and backstrip bound in. Bookplate of Nils Nordqvist. Spine slightly faded. Very fine.

 

George-Daniel de Monfreid (1856-1929) was a French painter and art collector, born in New York. During his studies at the Académie Julian, Monfreid formed friendships with Paul Gauguin, Verlaine and Aristide Maillol. Along with Gustave Fayet, he was one of the first collectors of the works of Gauguin, and one of his earliest biographers.
